Olowo-n'djo Tchala, Founder of Alaffia, on the Healthy Home Hour, This Saturday!

Olowo-n'djo Tchala is celebrating 10 years of fair trade with his company Alaffia, with an ambiciuos US Empowerment Tour! 19 states, 8, 780 miles in 2 months in a bio-diesel vehicle! Alaffia started as a small Shea Butter co-op in Togo, West Africa and now counts over 500 women as members! Alaffia is so much more than just a skin-care line; they support fair trade policies, environmental sustainability, economic sustainability and bee preservation! They have started substantial initiatives to support community empowerment such as: Bikes for Education to help children, often young girls, in rural communities get to and from school, school supply donations and school repair. In response to deforestation, they help to provide alternative sustainable fuel to families, donation of 1,000 fruit and forage trees each year from 2006-2010, 4,000 in 2011 and 6,000 in 2012! They started the Maternal Health Project in 2004, which provides monthly check-ups, prenatal vitamins, necessary medications and delivery care to 400 women annually. The mother and child are looked after for the first 6 months following delivery! Since, the program began, they have not lost one mother or child to maternal mortality, which has alarmingly high rates in Africa. And, as mentioned above, the co-op now works with over 500 women who are paid fair value for their knowledge and skills! Many women in West Africa are denied a proper education,. The Shea Butter culture and tradition allows women to support themselves and their families. This promotes gender equality and alleviates poverty within the community!
